Barbed wire has been invented in the XIXth century American West and used in colonial wars. During the First World War, it found important functions which brought enduring traces on the landscapes. On the military front, barbed wire protected the battlefields and locked up the military prisoners. It was also used to imprison a number of specific civilians, the enemy aliens and certain of the occupied populations. Marginal in the war, these male and female concentrated in camps surrounded by barbed wire encountered a new landscape.

Key words: barbed wire, concentration camp, deportation, watchtower, Great War, Lemkin.
