In Siberia, the landscape is as much mental as purely geographical. The most prevailing components of the cartography of Siberian memory are rivers. Among them the Yenissei and the Ob have a special status: the first because it is the place where an extraordinary pantheon to Stalin was built in the 1950’s, before it was closed, and Stalin drowned, while the second is linked with the tragedy in Kolpashevo: in 1979, trying to eradicate the evidences of mass killings of the 1930’s, the KGB threw to the river hundreds of dead bodies. Thus, rivers themselves turned into remembrance sites and make it useless for people to set up other memorials.
